Description
After catching some food from the spring, this beautiful Yellow-Crowned Night Heron flies up into a tree. I captured it Sequiota Park in Springfield Missouri, United States during the spring season. It was courtship season for this wild heron. The Yellow Crowned Night Heron is one of two night herons. It is a stocky wading bird ranging from 1 foot to 2 and half foot tall. The females are smaller than the males. The body and back are a smooth gray-blue, with a beautiful black scaled pattern on the wings. During courtship their yellow legs will turn to a coral / pink / red color. Also during mating season, long, thin, white feathers grow to the back of the crown. Their bills are black or dark blue. They have a faint yellow / off white stripe on top of their head, which is where they got their name from.
