This cute female Mallard sits on the edge of a pond disguised behind the dead winter grass located in Nathanael Greene Park / Close Memorial Park in Springfield Missouri, United States. This photo is focused on the male. Mallards belong to the subfamily Anatinae of the waterfowl family Anatidae. The males have glossy green and blue heads while the females are mainly brown-speckled. Both genders have an area of white bordered black speculum feathers which commonly include iridescent blue feathers especially among the males.
