Description
A view looking down Round Lake Channel towards Charlevoix South Pierhead Light located near Charlevoix, Michigan, United States. This is located on Lake Michigan which is part of the Great Lakes. At the time we were standing here, we didn't realize the boats you see in this photo had actually turned around and came back because the Lake Michigan was having really rough seas and strong waves. The first light was located on the north pier and was built in 1885 to guide ships to the newly improved Pine River channel. It survived for 63 years but due to deterioration, it was replaced in 1948 with this new steel structure on the south pier. The light was was moved to this new lighthouse structure. In 1989 the old wooden pier was replaced with the current steel and concrete pier.
