Description
Some female cow elk walk along the Buffalo National River on a cold fall season and foggy morning in Boxley Valley, Arkansas, United States. This is near the small town of Ponca. The females were hanging out along the river and in the woods, while the males were in open field area, which I also have photos of. This is a popular area for elk viewing. Also called wapiti, they are one the largest species of the deer family. Elk range in forest and forest-edge habitats, feeding on grass, plants, leaves, and bark. The males have large antlers , like this one, which they shed and regrow each year.
