After catching some food from the spring, this beautiful Yellow-Crowned Night Heron flies up into a tree to rest its fully belly. I took this photo at Sequiota Park in Springfield Missouri, United States. I took this during the spring season so it was courtship season for this heron. The Yellow Crowned Night Heron is one of two night herons. It is a stocky wading bird ranging from 1 foot to 2 and half foot tall. The females are smaller than the males. The body and back are a smooth gray-blue, with a beautiful black scaled pattern on the wings. During courtship their yellow legs will turn to a coral / pink / red color. Also during mating season, long, thin, white feathers grow to the back of the crown. Their bills are black or dark blue. They have a faint yellow / off white stripe on top of their head, which is where they got their name from.
