Description
A cute Arctic Ground Squirrel sets alongside the road in Denali National Park, Alaska, United States on a rainy day. Arctic ground squirrels are the largest and most northern of the North America ground squirrels. They are common in ice-free mountainous regions of Denali. They are burrowing animals and establish colonies in areas with well-drained soils and views of the surrounding landscape. Colonies often consist of multiple burrows and a maze of tunnels beneath the surface. Like many other arctic animals, they have unique physiological adaptions that allow them to survive during winter. Arctic ground squirrels are obligate hibernators and spend 7 to 8 months in hibernation. In Denali, they are active from late April to early October, but the sexes and age-classes show some differences in their annual activity patterns. (source: National Park Service-Alaska)
