Description
A male Bald Eagle just landed on the nest. The female is down in the nest guarding the eggs. Their nest is near Lake Springfield in Springfield Missouri, United States. The bald eagle is a bird of prey found in North America and is the United States National Bird. Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. They are found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for their nests.
The bald eagle is an opportunistic feeder which subsists mainly on fish, that it snatches from the water with its claws / talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species, up to 13 feet deep, 8.2 feet wide, and 1 metric ton in weight. They reach maturity in four to five years which is when their heads turn white.
