Description
Holgate Glacier is located in Alaska's Kenai Fjords National Park. As you stand there admiring it's beauty, you'll hear constant popping and cracking, and occasionally it'll calve like it is in this photo. Calving is the breaking off of chunk of ice at the edge of the glacier. It is a form of ice ablation or ice disruption and is normally caused by the glacier expanding. It's the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. Sometimes the ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, or a crevasse wall breakaway.
