Description
A couple of goose feathers float on a pond at Sequiota Park in Springfield Missouri. I love how they just float on the surface. Feathers are epidermal growths that form the distinctive plumage on birds and other animals. They are one of the most complex integumentary structures found in vertebrates. Feathers cover most of the birds body, however they arise only from certain well-defined tracts of the skin. They aid in flight, insulation, and waterproofing.
