Description
Malus, also more commonly known as a Crabapple, Crab Apple, or Wild Apple tree is a small deciduous (ornamental) tree from the family Rosacea. It's native to the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere. This was taken in Springfield Missouri. They typically grow to 13 - 39 ft (4 - 12 m) tall at maturity with a dense, twiggy crown. The leaves are 1.2-3.9 inches long, alternate, simple, with a serrated margin. The flowers are borne in corymbs, and have five petals, which may be white, pink or red, and are perfect with usually red stamens that produce copious pollen, and a half-inferior ovary. Flowers occurs in the spring. The tree bares small apples that require cross-pollination between individuals by insects. They are used as food plants by the larvae of a large number of Lepidoptera Species.
