Description
After play fighting, a bull elk peaks in between the antlers of the other buil elk. This was taken on an early fall season morning in Boxley Valley, Arkansas, United States near the town of Ponca, AR. It is mating season so the males were very active. Behind the trees is the Buffalo National River. This is a popular area for elk viewing. Also called wapiti, they are one the largest species of the deer family. Elk range in forest and forest-edge habitats, feeding on grass, plants, leaves, and bark. The males have large antlers which they shed and regrow each year. Please note this photo is dark because it was taken early in the morning before sunrise.
