If your learning about photography and looking into filters, you're probably see mixed opinions on UV Filters. Some say they are worthless, a pain, and are a waist of money. Then there are others who say don't go without them. I think it all depends on how you look at them. If you want them to make your photos better, and help with bright light, then I would so no. When it comes to bright sunny days, I recommend a circular polarizer instead. If you take photos aimed at direct light such as the sun, or a street light, you have to remove the UV filter to avoid extra white reflection spots that you don't want (unless that's the look you're going for).

I personally use UV Filters for protection. It's much cheaper to buy a good glass UV filter, then it is a new lens. I had my first experience with that last summer. We went to the beach for a family vacation. I'm so thankful for the filter because it saved my lenses. Thankfully I had an extra filter just the right size that I made my mom put it on her point and shoot camera. My filter got scratched up from the blowing sand, and the salt water in the air, put a nasty film like coating on my filter that would not clean off. This would have been much more costly if I didn't have filters on. Every since that trip, I don't like to go anywhere without something to protect my lens glass. Yes, there are times I have to remove the filter, and it can be a pain, but it goes back on before I walkaway.

If you use a filter, and do fine art photography or professional portraits, regardless the type of filter it is, make sure you get good glass. Yes, they can be pricey, but cheap glass/plastic can distort photos and affect white balance. Make sure you always check reviews before buying.
